E-Comm (Final Activity): E-comm in Organizational Development

7:42 PM Unknown 0 Comments

Electronic communication creates an easier way of education. Information is easily and infinitely accessed.  It is even common in the workplace to use electronic communication. In fact, we are now considered living in a cybernetic era where communication and technology are vital to our daily lives.  They do not just serve as a luxurious way to communicate, but a necessity.  This blog is a simple testimony how electronic communication evolved to be a part of life that does not require to be classified. Imagine a day without browsing any social media websites or sending a report to your boss, handwritten and personal. Just imagine the inefficiency and the time to spend without using any electronic media to communicate. Thinking of these situations are even as hard as accepting the absence of electronic media.

At present, i do not belong to any organization to discuss how electronic communication is used and how it influences the entire structure and policies governing the organization. But in my very short experience in a sales company, communication in any form is the most important element of its progress. All the transactions made highly depend on e-communication. The conveyance of information is made through e-communication. And everything that completes its entirety, e-communication plays the most essential role. More than its internal organizational affairs, it has even widened its marketability and accessibility to its basic services through social media. In fact, it has different Facebook pages for different branches around the nation for easier communication with the curious and interested audiences. Different social media sites are also used to advertise career opportunities. Furthermore, in a government agency where I worked for almost two years, I have seen the high dependence on electronic media to easily deliver its service to its recipients. It is also structured with different levels of offices. From the dissemination of information to the collation of necessary reports and documents, it uses electronic communication to lessen cost, increase efficiency, and faster attainment of task. Updates on services are also posted on national and regional websites for transparency.

Relative to the use of social media, researches are now based on the netizens’ responses to the services provided. Although, in this manner, the authenticity of emotions and experiences expressed cannot be easily validated, however, it provides a glimpse on how people would react positively, negatively, and constructively. The external identity portrayed on social media, confirmed by the netizens may also be an essential basis for internal development. For an example, a government poverty reduction program now being implemented in the country, has continuously put in extreme dubiety, whether it indeed escalates the well-being of the poorest households or unfortunately defies self-reliance and increase dependence to government aid. Reports and negative reactions flooded on online news and even on private social media accounts have caught the attention of ordinary citizens to learn more on the issue. The reactions heighten the awareness and interest of different individuals to socially participate by equally posting reactions on their personal observations and experiences regarding the issue.
Also, when it comes to career opportunities, most companies advertise job vacancies online. Relatively, because most job seekers find it easier to look for jobs and send their credentials online, background checking becomes easier as well. Even the exact address of residence can now be searched and the exact building can be seen online. Validation of credentials is as well researched online. Our social accounts are also used for personality and behavioral check- how we portray ourselves might consequently be used both for our benefit and danger.

Learning happens within social context. With the use of electronic communication, we have expanded our ways to learn through interacting in a more massive number of people. It is not obscure to consider that electronic communication has been part of every one's life. Not only limited to the organization per se, but of the employees themselves that makes up its structure. There is a common premise which states that our dependence to technology is a reflection of man's brilliance and our immense intelligence on making all things around us, possible. However, not all of our actions even envisioned to be great would create an equally great effect. The human nature to expand more, and make things bigger than they were before might lead to detrimental results.
Indeed, electronic communication somehow replaces traditional form. Before, people are very particular on deliverance of the messages, and even good relationships are built, because of the sincerity of communication, and the expression of emotions even non-verbally communicated. Now, our dependence to electronic communication has faded the valuable effects of communicating and building good relationship with others.

At present, employers in fact use Social Networking Sites (SMS) to spy and recruit prospective employers, and learn how they present themselves to the world. Certainly, SMS play an active role in the proliferation of the digital image (Grant & Meadows, 2010).

The disadvantageous effect of the use of excessive electronic communication is on how to draw the line of sincerity of emotions. With an undefined barrier with no flesh being touched, nor any faces being seen, communication can be easily controlled; thus is prone to misunderstanding. A single mistake on the construction of the messages and even the understanding of the content might bring a larger dodgy effect. Sometimes, we even incorporate ourselves in an online community, as an escape for various emotional hurdles we privately experience. We unconsciously express our emotions to release our anxiousness; what we thought satisfies our emotions would make us better individuals, but unfortunately is never beneficial.  Even in resolving conflicts, the use of social media to communicate on a particular problem might worsen the situation. Even in the manner on how the messages are delivered, a simple mistake on capitalization of words and sentences might mean anger to the recipient, but an error from the sender. The tone can be misread resulting therefore to more problematic situations. Other example is the excessive use of social media. With no direct supervision, even at office hours, we tend to use our social media accounts to relax, to be entertained, and unconsciously we realize that we have spent hours browsing, commenting on different statuses, liking different posts, resulting to inefficiency of work rendered.

We rely most of our human activities in modern technologies, in the same way that we live to communicate. In this cybernetic age, we have also found new ways of literacy- functional, critical, and rhetorical literacy. Functional literacy means, computers and modern electronic communication are used as tools for everyday life; Critical Literacy means we have critically examining both the positive and negative implications of adoption of technology;  and Rhetorical Literacy which implies that we are producers of technology, creating a massive catalog of human knowledge and creative work that are accessible to everyone (Seel, 2012).

Our life is not designed to stay in isolation with no one or anything who and that will reciprocate our interaction. In today's time, everything is done in a whisk, and the emergence of new ways to communicate only manifests our unconscious acceptance to changing society.

Rieon and Annalin Wedding Teaser

2:37 AM Unknown 0 Comments

As we take on another chapter of our life together, a short video showing a glimpse on how our love story started. It was not planned. It was, I believed a destiny, that happened in God's perfect time.

He was in his 6th year then, I was just a freshie. We found the same interest in Mathematics, but I chose to pursue a communication degree. He was too strict, I was relaxed. He was very active in student affairs, I was too focused on academics. These ironies made us perfectly complementary. After almost 7 years, we are about to get married)

I want to share our wedding teaser telling the story on how it all began. :)

The Wedding Details

1:49 AM Unknown 5 Comments

In less than two weeks, my fiance and I are about to eternally unite. And just like those couples who wish to get married, one of the main concerns is on how much budget is enough for a dream wedding. You will never know what is enough until you start planning. I guess, prices vary from place to place. But for those who are living in Pangasinan, I will share to you our budget plan, and some tips on how to maximize your limited budget but never to sacrifice the quality of all important elements on your wedding day.

THE VENUE

We initially planned to have our wedding ceremony in a resort in Dagupan City. Considering all the possible expenses including the catering services, the venue, and the accommodation, we decided to look for a cheaper place that may offer an equally exquisite ambiance or a better one. My friend who is working at the provincial government of Pangasinan suggested to me to consider the Sison Auditorium. Well, I was hesitant at first because of the size. It is too big for what we initially planned as simple and intimate wedding. And yet, I have to give it a try. I asked my fiancé to take a leave and accompany me to visit the place (although I am very familiar of the place already and been to it numerously), and to my surprise, he was so amazed. He even told me these exact words, "I want to marry you in this beautiful place".

To give you a glimpse of the auditorium, below are the pictures of this amazing place.

The place is so amazing. The interior is definitely elegant. But how about the price? Well, we checked on it immediately, and we were again surprised that it was way cheaper than what we initially thought. For 15,000php, you can have an 8-hour use of the entire air-conditioned facility.

We decided to seal the deal. But it wasn't an easy process. We have to give a request letter to the provincial governor indicating our purpose to use the place as a wedding venue, and we have to compromise our desired wedding date on its availability. We also have to wait for a week or more for the approval of our request. Our initial plan on our wedding date was on December 19 and was moved to December 12. Right after we received the approval notice, we paid it in full immediately.

THE CATERER

We looked for different caterers nearby  Sison Auditorium. We were eyeing for a catering service from a hotel , but it was too expensive. Then an employee in the provincial capitol recommended us to Regina's Catering. We check on its Facebook page, but it was outdated. We were actually a bit dismayed on the status of our wedding plans. And after 2 weeks, we decided to finally contact Regina's Catering, although we were a bit hesitant, but based on the employee who recommended it to us, it is the same caterer who caters all the provincial events. And we are so blessed, that we were directed towards the best choice. The caterer, Mrs. Regina Sevidal, generously accommodated all our queries. The price rates of the food menu were really within our budget. She is also very creative in decorating wedding venues and reception. You may want to check this:

We chose the 300php meal/pax. We added 75php for the dessert buffet to be served while waiting for the wedding couple to enter the reception. For 75,000php, we can provide a sumptuous 5-course meal to our beloved guests with overflowing desserts and drinks.

Beef Italiano

Pork Rollette

Chicken Sate

Beer Sauteed Fish Fillet

Mixed Vegetables

THE FLORIST

Mrs. Sevidal is also our florist. Although, the catering package already includes simple table settings and arrangement of the venue, we still added more flowers and decorations to the venue. I will be having a bouquet of  tulips, a rose bouquet for bridesmaids, female principal sponsors, and parents, and boutonniere for the male sponsors, groomsmen, groom, and the parents.

Price: 25,000php

THE VIDEOGRAPHER/PHOTOGRAPHER

In April or May 2015, we met Noel Ubaldo in an event in SM Baguio among several photographers and videographers. We were astonished by his and team'a works. After a month or so, we contacted him and made a deal. For 60,000php we already have a prenuptial shoot, save-the-date teaser, same-day edit, photo-booth on the wedding, mini exhibit, and numerous printed and framed photos. :)

THE WEDDING COUTURIER

A cousin of my fiancé recommended a couturier in Divisoria. We never had other options for this because of the limited budget we have. And knowing the place, it would be way cheaper than  having our wedding gowns and suits made in Baguio or in Pangasinan. We paid a total of 36,000php for the groom's suit, barong tagalong for parents and 6 groomsmen, cocktail dresses for 6 bridesmaids, a dress used for prenuptial shoot, and 2 long gowns for parents.

I do not actually know how to rate the couturier. I could not even say if I am completely satisfied or disappointed on their service. We went through series of disagreements, misunderstanding, and arguments. The quality of the gowns are finely sew, but they failed to imitate all designs given  to them.
THE WEDDING INVITATION

We made our wedding invitation very simple. We made our own layout, and had it printed in black and white on rustic papers we bought at Papemelroti We embellished the invitations with lace and ribbons. A total of 1200php for 80 printed invitations.

THE WEDDING FAVORS

We will just be giving wedding favors to our principal sponsors, because we often observe that favors seemed useless and only serve as decoration and do not last for long. Instead, a photo-booth is set up for the guests to have their own wedding memoirs.

We will be giving paper products we bought from a store named Papemelroti. This is in line with our rustic theme as seen on our wedding invitation. We also included a tag line, "happiness is hand made". For this, we spent 5000php for 30 principal sponsors. :)

THE WEDDING CAKE

I am a cake lover, and I want our wedding cake to be perfect and beautiful. Oh well. Who would not dream to have DongYan wedding cake? But of course, I have to be practical and think numerously if it matters at all. And so, we made it our last priority. We chose a simple red ribbon special occasions cake. For just 4,000php and additional 1,000php refundable cake stand, we can now have an elegant fondant wedding cake. :)

THE WEDDING RING
We wanted our ring to be extra special, but as we go through the planning  things really changed unexpectedly, and even the expected amount to spend on a particular thing was oftentimes beyond our plans. So, we chose a simple two-toned wedding bands we bought at BHF Gemline, SM Baguio. And the pair only costs 12,000php.

THE MAKEUP ARTIST

We found the best makeup artist in Dagupan City who gives a reasonable price for her services. We didn't know her personally, not even a recommendation from anyone, but because of social media, we simply found her. We were amazed by the simplicity of her works and passion to make every bride shine naturally on her big day. For 20,000php wedding makeup package, I will have an airbrush makeup plus 9 additional heads for a traditional makeup, with free makeup for three flower girls.

To sum it all, we spent 254, 200 on major elements on our wedding day. Of course, these are not the only things you need to save up on. You have to make budgets on transportation allowances, prenuptial wardrobe and makeup, fees for day coordinator and emcee, printing of wedding programs, hotel accomodation, food, etc.

Just to give you a sample of our additional expenses:

Traveling allowance:20,000php

(yes, and even more than that. Travelling back and forth Manila is expensive, we usually allot at least 4000 pesos including hotel accommodation, and food every time we travel to Manila for gown fitting and shopping for wedding needs)

Marriage License and other Pertinent Documents: 1,500php

External Hard drive: 3,500php (we needed this to backup  raw files of our wedding pictures and videos)

Prenuptial wardrobe and makeup: 5,000php (I made my own makeup to lessen the expenses)

Day coordinator and Emcee: 13,000

Printing of Wedding Program and other documents: 500php

Candles: 200php

Wedding boxes: 100php

Airfare and accomodation for honeymoon: 7500php (we are having our 4-day, 3-night honeymoon in El Nido, Palawan)

Hotel Accommodation for families and friends: 16,000php

Bride and groom's shoes: 5,000php

Bridal Robe: 350php

Pastor's Love Gift: 4000

Pianist:1500php

Personal Preparation:2500php (My makeup artist requested me to dye my hair with light brown and wear contact lenses)

Total: 80,650php

Grand Total: 334,850php

This is not the final total expenses. It is in fact better if you always have additional allowances. But above all, no matter how small or big your budget is  the most important thing is the day after the wedding. Your life together as husband and wife, and on how you will live your life to be worthy individuals who will contribute significantly in the development and creation of your own family.

We, too, have to discover it ourselves. Together with my future husband, we will take this new journey together.

E-COMM: EMERGENCE OF TECHNOLOGY

7:53 AM Unknown 0 Comments

The world has evolved into a globalized community, narrowing space for social interaction and abolishing time in our own viewpoint. We have evolved ourselves jointly with technological development and incorporate our own consciousness as a result of our dependence to media.

Indeed, communication media are integral part of our world. Throughout the years, they don't only transition themselves but they relatively educed the entire humanity to face a different social milieu. Mass media are too important in our life that we hardly stand on the issues affected by communication. Consequently, mass media are too big and too wide to be neglected (Hiebert & Reuss, 1995).

The expression of thoughts extinguishes the barriers of man and media, effecting to the increase of social participation. The vastness of media reach even made people easily and mistakenly take them for granted. However, their proper operation is too vital in our lives to be disregarded or in any way, be neglected (Deming, 1988).

Media not only represent the evolution of human society as far as communication is concerned; they are rather powerful tool to continuously reinvent our own sense of identity. Presently, internet and electronic communication are widely used as new ways to interact.

In our own search for extensive expression of freedom, we have ingeniously modified what we initially thought of as certain and indisputable. Throughout our quest for such liberation, we consciously and unconsciously exchange our own idea of privacy, and embrace the sociological consequences of altering our own way of human interaction. The compartmentalization of our public and private identity seemed to be coequal.

Our right of privacy has long been bestowed upon us but the exercise of such is our responsibility we need to continue and live by.  Every person has the right to control the commercial use of his own identity (Fenandez, 1998). Our expressive process on the internet is becoming more evident. But the scope of our own expression of public self leads us to misunderstand the purpose of digital media. Furthermore, the extensive disclosure of us has led to various effects, particularly the issue of cyber bullying.

Cyber bullying is an act of willful harm with the use of electronic technology. It is used to describe the behaviors, particularly of the adolescents while interacting through internet. Common examples are defamatory and malicious statements against someone or something.

We depend mostly on mass media; same is true for much of our entertainment. The effects of our modern communication are countless and diverse. It may be grounded on perspectives, behaviors, and values. It may be huge or small. I may take time or it only lingers for a while. But in this cybernetic age, communication process becomes faster, cheaper, and easier (Hiebert & Reuss, 1995).

With the convergence of new technology, inflicting harm takes less time and energy. Unfortunately spreads in a limitless reach. And worst, the possible effect of the evolution of the internet world, would be a great torment to any victim. While it continues to be bigger and wider, it is everyone’s responsibility to instill the consequences of online aggression, and to educate the more severe outgrowth in the social, psychological, and emotional state of the victims. Our role is to wisely use this communication. Who knows what we post online, may in turn affect our future, and will be taken against us.

E-COMM: THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE

7:36 AM Unknown 0 Comments

An initial assumption of the word message is the information being conveyed, or the content of what is communicated. In a broader sense, a message is the vital element of communication. It defines the process of sending and receiving information through a medium (Kennedy & Davis, 1992). For others, a message is a concept or a principle that may in effect shape behavior, perceptions, and understanding.

Our lives are saturated with information and images delivered by media technologies. Our exposure to mass communications significantly forms our interpretation of the world. Indeed, media serve as the providers of information interpreted by the receivers.

Media messages are universally perceived by the audience members. They are also seen as “magic bullets” striking every eye and ear, and therefore create massive behavioral effects. Furthermore, media provide us meaning for reality that influences us in shaping our personal and shared interpretations of the physical and social world around us (DeFleur, 1991). It is also often defined that media are major channel by which passing of meanings takes place and thus help us describe and think about things and situations around us.

The interrelationship of medium, message, and meanings was summarized by the idea of Marshall Mcluhan who coined the phrase, “the medium is the message”. It is a paradox statement which means, the medium itself is a powerful tool to convey meanings that is in turn shape people’s understanding in the situation they are into. The message is literary the content being conveyed and certainly influential in nature, but the manner in which it is emerged creates a stronger effect (McLuhan, 1964).

Consequently, Mcluhan argued that a particular media through which people communicate is indecisively more important than what has been communicated or what we call the message.

At present, media are the reflections of technological development that we as audience and the users consider them as part of our daily lives. In today’s cybernetic age, internet is the extension of our human affairs being the tool for our social engagement or just an expression of our personal thoughts.

That being said, the technology itself that serves as the channel to transfer the message changes us. The electronic technology in restraining and reconstructing patterns of social independence and most importantly, all aspect of personal life-self, family, neighborhood, education, job, government, and relationship to others (McLuhan, 1967). Electronic technology also helps to strengthen participation and unification of our understanding on social issues which now has been more apparent with the use of internet.

It is not the invention or the machine or electronic technology that helps us to understand the message or the content of what is being conveyed. Rather it is the usage and the importance of the technology itself that shapes and contributes to our own perception. A common example is cellphone. Text messages and calls are no use without the cellphone. Truly, we may receive the same message with the use of other kinds of media. But our notion on cellphone as a technological device is another thing-its purposes, its very own characteristics, its importance, and its usage.

E-COMM: STRENGTHS & OPPORTUNITIES

7:24 AM Unknown 0 Comments

It is in fact that electronic communication specifically internet towers above all kinds of media. However, in a midst of developing municipalities tacked on the traditional customs and inferiority ruled over by modern practices, modernity is still on the state of torpidity.

DSWD has a long history that begun after the World War II when social welfare was materialized as an important responsibility of the government. It started in 1915 when it was firstly called the Public Welfare Board (PWB) that served to study and regulate all government and private entities engaged in social services. Throughout the years, it underwent major revamps from one constitution to another and from one administration to another, and had been into major modification as far purposes, identity, and scopes were concerned. Only in 1987, that it was named Department of Social Welfare and Development under the executive order 123 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino. Consequently, the Revised Administration code of 1987 established the name, organizational structure, and functional areas of responsibility of DSWD and further defined its statutory authority.

The Department of Social and Welfare has a remarkable move to alleviate poverty through a conditional cash transfer program which not only benefited the poorest households but also uplifted the rate of employment in our country, providing opportunities to those who dream to be public servants and leaders of the future. The program is named the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) which serves a total of 4,436,732 households nationwide.

Analyzing the technological communication used by the program, it created its own Management Information System (MIS) that handles the database and its entire data processing requirement. It manages the conveyance of information from the national, to regional, and to municipal levels. Furthermore, it validates errors and correction to maintain the efficiency of the program implementation.

The program has also established three major systems to systematically organize its implementation, address its immediate issues and concerns, and ensure that the program has effectively met its objectives. These are Compliance Verification System (CVS) which records the compliance to the program conditions, Beneficiary Update System (BUS) which records and reports changes in beneficiaries’ data, and the Grievance Redress System (GRS) which captures and resolves complaints and queries about the program.

However, despite these systems, it would not be concluded that it runs smoothly and perfectly. The systems are still managed by humans, and therefore are certainly not exempted from errors such as misspelled names and basic information during encoding. Complaints directed to GRS also might take time as it is channeled through letter, email, and SMS. Addressing complaints cannot be easily resolved without a due process and proper investigation, and that is one of the things that everyone within the program must patiently bear with.

Nevertheless, the program in general can be applauded on its dedication to serve and meet the purposes of social protection. The system wherein it exists is an implication of its commitment to transparency and integrity in the service. More than the use of modern technology to fasten the service to the people, it continues to embrace the modernity for development. Most people now regardless of social status use internet and cellphone to communicate. The open communication line between the program by providing different medium whether in email, letter, or SMS and even verbal communication to raise their questions and address their concerns is a good manifestation of first, empowerment to speak up, and second of equal treatment of the beneficiaries capacity to communicate.

On the other hand, it's transparency to the people can be a detrimental factor. Its transparency can be subjected to the infliction of personal interests and perhaps of political interest. The common problem in the program is the inclusion error or the inclusion of non-eligible households as beneficiaries and the exclusion error which is the exclusion or the non-inclusion of the potentially eligible households who are later on verified as poor. The mere existence of these errors is an indication that truly; there are pitfalls inherent wherein the program exists. And the idea of political intervention should never be disregarded as a mere shallowness, but rather a serious matter.

Whatever the circumstances are, in almost a decade of its implementation, the program coverage of 79 provinces, 143 cities, and 1484 municipalities is not easy to monitor. Yet, made it systematic and responsive to a need for continuous advancement with its support to new technology and modernity where everything commensurate possibilities.

Travels and Trips for the Last 2 Years

5:03 AM Unknown 0 Comments

My fiancé and I love travelling. During our 4th year together, we started having our vacations together in nearby resorts and famous local beaches in Region 1 (Ilocos Region). Last year, we decided to go farther and visited the province of Camarines Sur in Bicol Region.

Here are some of the photos featuring some of the famous tourist spots in Region 1 and affordable resorts you can also visit that certainly have quality service.

April 2013: Hundred Islands, Alaminos City, Pangasinan
Our first Hundred Islands experience in celebration of our 4th year Anniversary.

After our island hopping, we checked in at Vista de las Islas Resort Hotel. I guess, it is the biggest resort hotel in Alaminos City.

December 2014: Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

We were initially disappointed with the bad weather condition on our first day. But, thanks God, we got to see the sunshine before we left the place.

We stayed at Casa Consuelo for 2 nights. (Just a tip for those who wish to travel in Pagudpud on peak seasons, you must reserve for your hotel accommodation months before your travel. Trust me, the number of people is very overwhelming) :) Oh well, try to visit Casa Consuelo. They have a good accommodation, kind staff, and great food.

April 2014: Final Option Beach Resort, San Juan, La Union

As its name suggests, it was really our final option, but it ended up as one of the best resorts we have been to. If you want to spend your day on a beach front watching people surfing, while enjoying a resort ambiance, and at the same time, be relaxed with good music while drinking a bottle of cold drink, then Final Option Beach Resort must be your first option. :)

December 2014: Caramoan, Camarines Sur
We decided this time to go somewhere south. and tada! It was, by far, the best place we have visited.

April 2015: Bali Hai Beach Resort, Bauang, La Union

For our 6th Anniversary celebration, we went to Bali Hai Resort, Bauang, La Union. J

For us, experience is our greatest investment. We do not usually go shopping or indulge ourselves on material things, because such are temporary and will (in a natural course of time) eventually vanish. Aside from enjoying our nation’s treasures, we also enjoy different local cuisines that truly define the people’s rich cultural identity.

This December, we are all set for our trip to El Nido, Palawan. Woah!
